Indoor and outdoor lighting is universally essential to business activities. Like other essentials, commercial lighting carries with it an ongoing, unavoidable cost. So why not make a change that’s good for your bottom line and the environment too? This article 6 Benefits Of Using LED Lights For Business and provides a case study where a busy office building significantly increased their bottom line after replacing fluorescent lights with LEDs.

Benefits

1. LED lights save money.
There are two primary ways in which LEDs save users money. The first of these is quite obvious, in that they are far more energy efficient than all other types of lighting options. In addition to this, LEDs lower maintenance costs to nearly zero by eliminating the need to replace bulbs throughout their rated lifespan and therefore avoiding the need to pay disposal fees. Long term, this savings more than makes up for their higher initial cost. Rebates are also commonly offered to encourage energy efficient lighting which can help offset the initial cost of installation.

2. LED lights last longer.
Life cycles of LEDs are measured in tens of thousands of hours, which is exponentially longer than other lights. Light output throughout this time period is consistent, unlike most other types of lighting such as HIDs or fluorescents. Even after exceeding the rated number of hours, LEDs still produce sufficient light as they begin to fade.

3. LEDs are better for lighting.
LEDs provide an overall better quality and accuracy of light. These lights provide optimal color rendering, sharper focus, and enhanced ambient lighting to improve your facility’s appearance and give customers and employees a better overall experience. This improvement in lighting accuracy also helps to improve worker safety, making it easier for them to avoid mistakes or hazards.

4. LEDs provide a better work environment.
LED lighting is glare-free and less tiring on your eyes. Because of this, business owners will find it improves workplace productivity and increases employee satisfaction. In addition to this, the higher accuracy of these lights improves workplace safety due to higher visibility. Also, unlike legacy lighting such as mercury filled fluorescent tubes, LED lights do not shatter and do not contain toxic materials which reduces the necessity for special disposal fees.

5. LEDs are easy to upgrade.
It has never been easier to upgrade to LED lighting. From drop-in bulbs that work with existing fixtures, to full on replacement fixtures, upgrading with Straits is a straightforward process. In many cases, these lights simplify the installation due to them not requiring ballasts or extra supporting equipment as everything needed to operate them is self contained within the fixture. Let us help you upgrade to our premium shatterproof and mercury-free solutions are the best choices for your business.

6. LEDs are energy efficient.
By reducing CO2 emissions and efficiently converting electricity into light, LEDs are better for the environment and can cut energy consumption by upwards of 70 percent. Depending on the size of the application, this can save a company enough to cover the cost of upgrading within a matter of months. After paying for itself from energy savings, these lights will continue to pay dividends in annual energy savings for years to come.

Business LED Lighting Case Study

To support the 6 Benefits Of Using LED Lights For Business, we’ve outlined a case study where a business switched from fluorescent lamps to LED office lighting fixtures. This case study involves a busy office building based in Michigan.

BEFORE

Dimly lit office space with fluorescent lighting prior to using Straits LED lighting fixtures

AFTER

LED troffer lighting fixtures on the ceiling of an office building illuminating the entire office space

Aside from the clearly apparent improvement in overall lighting quality, the business saw several benefits from switching to LED lighting such as:

  • 115% increase in annual ROI
  • Longer lasting lighting
  • Significant reduction of lighting mercury
  • Significant reduction of CO2 annually

Americans have always liked big things, from hamburgers to skyscrapers and everything in between. That includes the appliances in their homes. But American households are also getting smarter about their energy use.

According to recent data provided by the Energy Information Agency (EIA), the federal authority for gathering energy-related data in the United States, the types and number of electricity consuming devices used in the American home is changing.

Data released from the 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey shows usage patterns of traditional, and not so traditional, devices for the year. Compared to the same data from 2015, the survey shows changes in how homes used, turned on and off, powered and controlled their devices.

Not surprisingly, the survey shows that American households like their devices on the big side. For example, the number of homes with larger televisions continues to increase, with 72% of households reporting that their most-used television was a 40-inch screen or greater, a big increase from the 58% who said the same thing in 2015.

Americans also like more of their devices. For example, consider the refrigerator. Like many things in the American household, one is not enough. The survey showed that the percentage of households with more than one refrigerator grew from 30% in 2015 to 34% in 2020.

Dishwashers also factor heavily into the electricity consumption in the American household. According to the EIA, the percentage of households using a dishwasher four or more times per week increased from 21% in 2015 to 26% in 2020. This may be due in large part to American households spending more time at home because of the pandemic.

The findings were not all about bigger and more devices. In fact, despite their hearty appetite for all things electric, Americans are getting smarter and more efficient about their energy use. For example, the EIA reports that although people spent more time at home, residential energy use declined by 4% in 2020 from the previous year.

Perhaps some of those savings come for the use of energy-efficient lighting. The survey found that the percentage of homes using all or mostly LED bulbs indoors rose from 4% to 47% between 2015 and 2020. The survey also found that more than 60% of households had an LED television as their most-used TV, up from one-third in 2015.

American also like to control their devices. According to the survey, about 40 million households had smart speakers in 2020, nearly 18 million of which were used to control at least one setting in the home, such as lighting, temperature or security.

Lastly, electric vehicles also made their appearance in the survey. More than three-quarters of electric vehicle owners surveyed reported that they charged their electric vehicle at their homes.

Peer-to-Peer EV Charging: By Holly Sauer  Published On Mar 2, 2022

The peer-to-peer electric vehicle (EV) market is expected to reach $1.08 billion in 2022. The market is expected to register a compound annual growth rate of 20% and exceed $6.7 billion between 2022 and 2032 due to growing advancements.

Peer-to-peer electrical charging is a system for people to share private EV chargers with other drivers when owners aren’t using it. It is designed to help with the lack of public charging infrastructure.

According to Fact.MR, more than 60% of peer-to-peer EV charging sales will be in the residential sector. Fact.MR’s report, “Peer-to-Peer Electric Vehicle Charging Market,” highlights three trends that are driving p2p charging sales: accessible charging stations, increasing adoption of EVs and government initiatives. Increasing the number of chargers in parking areas is also expected to lead to demand for these networks.

Rising fuel prices, preferences for EVs and a desire to reduce carbon emissions are also expected to increase the demand for this market. Grand View Research reported in 2021 that EV charging software and hardware developments are expected to change how EV owners use this technology. For example, some charging technologies can establish the charging time before a driver even plugs in.

According to Grand View Research’s peer-to-peer vehicle charging report, EV manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers (OEM) are working to strengthen EV charging infrastructure, which is expected to lead to increased p2p charging.

Grand View Research also reported that the residential segment accounted for more than a 61% share of the global revenue in 2021, which is due to OEMs and expanding peer-to-peer networks. However, between 2022 and 2030, commercial is expected to have the fastest growth rate.

North America accounts for over 35% of the global revenue of the peer-to-peer EV charging market.

Electrical Contractor Magazine – Smart Factories – Rick Laezman

From watches to phones, homes and buildings, smart technology has seemingly transformed every aspect of modern life. It should come as no surprise, then, that factories are getting smarter, too.

According to a report form market research firm Markets and Markets, the smart factories market is poised for growth.

Smart Factory Market With COVID-19 Impact by Component, Solution, Industry, and Region—Global Forecast to 2026” estimates the overall size of the global smart factory market. For further analysis, it also breaks the market into segments such as oil and gas, automotive, energy and power, pharmaceuticals and others.

According to the study, demand is rising in these industries for digital technologies such as the internet of things and artificial intelligence. Increased awareness and emphasis on energy efficiency, resource optimization and cost reduction in the production process are also driving demand for smart technology.

For example, industrial robots are becoming more commonplace in factories around the world. Industrial robots perform tasks such as electronic and mechanical assembly, product testing and materials handling.

The study examines the role of force sensors and how they have helped expand the use of robots and such processes as part insertion; buffing, polishing, and deburring; collecting data for testing and statistical process control; and many other functions.

In addition to robots, many factory environments are also deploying wireless networks coupled with remote or “distributed” autonomous devices outfitted with sensors. These so-called wireless sensor networks (WSN) help factories monitor physical or environmental conditions. WSNs are used in industries such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and water/wastewater treatment.

The study projects that the increasing popularity of industrial robots and WSNs will help drive growth in the smart factories market over the next several years. The global market is projected to reach $134.9 billion by 2026.
